Types of heating elements
Traditional heating elements
Traditional ovens are usually equipped with baking elements and broiling elements. The baking element is located at the bottom of the oven and plays a major role in most baking tasks. When the oven's baking function is turned on, the baking element at the bottom starts to work, transferring heat from the bottom to the inside of the oven through radiation and convection, heating the food evenly and creating a suitable temperature environment for making baked goods such as bread and cakes. The broiling element is located at the top of the oven. Hidden baking element
As oven design continues to innovate, modern ovens often use hidden baking elements, which are cleverly installed under the oven base. This design brings two significant advantages: first, it is easy to clean. Since the element is hidden, it is less likely that food residue will drip directly on the element, making daily cleaning of the oven easier; second, it can achieve more uniform temperature distribution, so that the baked food can be heated evenly in all parts, avoiding local overheating or undercooking.
Convection heating element
The convection oven is an upgrade on the basis of the traditional oven, adding a fan and a third heating element. This additional convection heating element works in conjunction with the fan, which quickly circulates the hot air in the oven, making the temperature in the oven more uniform, which not only greatly shortens the cooking time, but also allows every part of the food to be evenly cooked and colored.
How the heating element works
The work of the oven heating element is based on a basic physical principle - resistance heat generation. These elements are usually made of metal alloy materials with high electrical resistance, the most common of which is nickel-chromium alloy. When an electric current passes through the heating element, due to the resistance characteristics of the material, the electrical energy is converted into heat energy and the element heats up rapidly. For example, in a normal oven, when the power is turned on, the current flows into the heating element, and the nickel-chromium alloy wire inside the element begins to heat up, and the temperature can rise to several hundred degrees in a short time.
The heat generated is transferred to the interior of the oven in two main ways: radiation and convection. Radiation refers to the heat emitted directly from the heating element in the form of electromagnetic waves, which directly acts on the surface of the food to heat it up. Convection is the flow of hot air in the oven. Under the action of fans (in convection ovens) or natural circulation, the hot air transfers heat to all corners of the oven so that the air around the food can be evenly heated, thereby achieving a comprehensive and uniform cooking effect.
Maintenance and common problems of heating elements
Regular cleaning
Keeping the heating elements clean is essential for the performance and life of the oven. If food residues, grease, etc. accumulate on the elements for a long time, it will not only affect the efficiency of heat transfer, but also may produce odors at high temperatures and even cause fire hazards. For ordinary heating elements, you can wipe them gently with a soft damp cloth after the oven cools down. For hidden baking elements, you need to follow the oven's manual for cleaning operations.
Check for damage
It is necessary to check the heating elements regularly for signs of damage. Common signs of damage include cracks, breaks, or bulges on the surface of the element. If you find that the baking or broiling effect is not good, and the food is heated unevenly, it is likely that there is a problem with the heating element. Once the element is confirmed to be damaged, it should be replaced in time to ensure that the oven can work properly.
Proper use
Following the oven manufacturer's instructions is the key to protecting the heating element. Avoid using sharp or rough cleaning tools to avoid scratching the surface of the element; when cleaning the oven, avoid using detergents containing highly corrosive chemicals to prevent corrosion damage to the element. At the same time, do not open and close the oven door frequently during the operation of the oven to avoid damage to the heating element due to drastic changes in temperature.
